Hatin' on Cold 12/04/2009

Winter is finally here. It's cold, the days are short and the nights are long. Snow was finally hitting the ground yesterday. My work area is currently in a very, very cold part of the house, so don't worry if you don't see many updates over the next couple months.

That's not so say you shouldn't check in, because you should! I promise there will be a new marshamallow for posted around Christmas day. Actually, it'll be up by the 21st. Not sure when the next mallow will be up after that, though. I'm working on new material, new mallow tragedies, and I have yet to update you on the tragedy that is the calendar! I'm waiting til I get time to take a photo. No, really. I've been quite busy lately in "the real world" earning monies to keep the house warm and food in our bellies!

At any rate, I'll be about! For reals! Even more so if I find a warm corner...! **Hating winter**

Great day today, and not just because it was a day off work :) Great food with great friends, fun movie later in the evening. It's a good day to reflect on everything we have to be thankful for. Believe it or not, when things seem at their lowest (or actually are), it's the best time to start counting blessings. And remember to keep counting those blessings even after they keep multiplying!

Hope everyone has had a fun and safe holiday! Go check out the new mallow, and we'll catch you on the flip side!

With DeviantArt's recent partnership with Sheperd Fairey, many are likely to think they're either crazy or brilliant. I'm leaning toward the former. For those that aren't aware, DeviantArt, the online artist community and mega-gallery, has partnered with Fairey for an art contest, in which contestants take a selected Fairey image and "re-imagine" it and Fairey chooses the winners. A little tongue-in-cheek there, in light of his current copyright law issues (or more accurately, a career made of such issues)? That's an understatement!

In no way do I agree with DeviantArt's decision to do any kind of business with this individual. I had to take a long, hard think about what such a partnership of dA's might mean to me and my gallery. And what, if anything I might do about it. Reputation by association doesn't escape me in the least. And the utter irony of dA, an organization that has prided itself on helping artists keep tabs on copyright infringement within it's own galleries partnering with an individual known for copyright law abuse... that doesn't escape me either.

At this point in time, I've decided that the community of DeviantArt is important enough to me that I will continue to participate and upload work to my gallery there. I may change my mind later, I reserve that right! I decided that the small groups of artists I watch there, the smattering of individuals who watch me, and the conversations we have now and then are important enough to continue building those relationships on dA. I don't watch a lot of folks, not many watch me, and I don't have tons and tons of pageviews. Which is cool, and I value everyone I've interacted with, as they tend to be respectful, intelligent, and fun. That's my experience, and I hope dA's spat of insanity doesn't ruin it.

But I'll be keeping my eye on them.

The 2010 Marshamallow Surprise Calendar is on it's way! I'm expecting the first shipment by November 19th. It's available for pre-order in the Mallow Store now, $14.95 + shipping. 12 month wall calendar, 8.5"x11", opens up to 11"x17".

I'm really excited!

You've always wondered if by some chance, marshmallows could have ghosts. Surprise! They can, apparently.

That one mallow is a real weenie!

It's semi-official. I'll be moving the Marshamallow blog over here to Weebly. For awhile (most likely until I forget), I'll keep posting at the Blogger site, but eventually, I'll be transferring marshamallowsurprise.com to point here. Or something. At any rate, I'm lovin' Weebly so far and even managed to figure out how to change the header image. :P

Not bad for a rainy evening.

First Post! 10/16/2009

Woot! This here's a grand experiment to see if I can pull off a new home for the mallows! I'm really excited to have found Weebly, 'cause frankly, web design isn't my strong suit. I live and breathe print (mostly as a production artist, which I love doing), but web and I have a... history.

I realized not long ago that the marshmallow empire isn't likely to flourish if I can't bring it all under one roof somehow. So this is my attempt to do just that. I have an account at Artfire, I have some stuff at Zazzle, and I have a blog at Blogger. The bulk of my traffic resides at DeviantArt, though I'd like to expand the off DA traffic. To that end, I need consolidation.

What could you possibly want to know? Am I really that interesting? I was born in '77 (you do the math, I'm tired). I have a BFA in Visual Communication... I'm a graphic artist, but I also work for a really awesome company doing things that have no relation to graphic art at all. I'm married to a really kick-ass guy who's almost a decade younger than me, and we have quite the menagerie of people and pets in our home. Questions? Feel free to ask :)
